When receiving Dashain tika, people usually face east, because in Hindu tradition the east is considered the most auspicious direction. There are both religious and cultural reasons behind it.

Why face east

The sun rises in the east

The rising sun stands for light, new beginnings, energy and the victory of good over darkness. Vijaya Dashami celebrates Durga's victory over Mahishasur and Ram's victory over Ravan, so facing the sunrise while receiving blessings is seen as receiving that same positive energy.

East is the direction of the gods

In Vastu and the scriptures, each direction has a guardian (dikpal). The east belongs to Indra, king of the devas, so it is associated with divine power, prosperity and success. Most pujas, sandhya and havans are done facing east for the same reason.

It completes the ritual of blessing

The person receiving tika faces east, and the elder giving it faces west, toward them. The receiver sits in the auspicious direction to take in the elder's blessing: the red tika, the jamara and the words of ashirwad.

It follows the saait

Each year the Nepal Panchanga Nirnayak Samiti announces the auspicious time (saait) for tika, and usually the best direction to face as well, most often the east. If you are unsure in a given year, follow that year's announcement.

What the scriptures say

No scripture contains a verse that says “face east for Dashain tika.” The tika custom as practised in Nepal is a regional tradition. But it rests on a rule found throughout the texts: acts done for the gods and for blessings are performed facing east.

Shatapatha Brahmana (Yajurveda)

It calls the east the direction of the gods: That is why the Vedic fire altar is set so the performer faces east.

Grihya Sutras and Dharmashastras

These ritual manuals draw a clear line. Worship of the gods and auspicious samskaras are done facing east (prangmukha), while rites for the ancestors, such as shraddha and tarpan, are done facing south, the direction of Yama and the pitris. In Sorha Shraddha families face south for their ancestors; at Dashain they turn east for the goddess.

Manusmriti

It advises eating facing east for long life: This links to the elders' blessing at tika time: dirghayu bhava, may you live long.

Surya worship in the Vedas

Sandhya vandana, Gayatri japa and Surya arghya are all offered facing the rising sun. The Rigveda calls Surya the soul of all that moves and stands:

The Puranas on the dikpalas

The Puranas name Indra as guardian of the east, associated with victory and prosperity, which fits the spirit of Vijaya Dashami.

Devi Mahatmya

Dashain tika is tied to the Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati, part of the Markandeya Purana), recited through Navaratri. Tika and jamara are treated as the goddess's prasad on the day of her victory.

In short, the heart of Dashain tika is to face the direction of the gods and receive, through our elders, the blessing of the victorious goddess.
